Young Ernie

In 1938, as war with Germany began to seem ever more likely, the British government created giant, hydrogen-filled ‘barrage balloons’, designed to defend towns and cities in southern England from low-flying enemy aircraft.

Hitler’s Birthday Card

The Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, turned 70 on 18 March 1939. Three days earlier, Hitler’s forces had marched into Czechoslovakia. It now became clear that Hitler could not be trusted and that Chamberlain’s policy of appeasement had failed. Giles’s cartoon is a parody of one by Bernard Partridge (see here). The original cartoon was inspired by a notorious letter published by the Daily Mail four days before the 1924 General Election, which had attempted to undermine Labour Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald by linking him with a Communist leader, Grigory Zinoviev.
